according to www.jiemintionary.com is:
It is a business set up by chinese children who invest in new clothes so that their elder married relatives can comment about
1) how tall they've grown (applies if they're children)
2) how handsome or pretty they look (applies to pretty much everyone, even if you're a troll like me)
Or so they can ask questions like:
1)Got bf or gf already? (Yeah, like im going to tell u even if i had one, stingy aunt.)
2)When are you getting married?
3) Where did you get that dress/shirt? (even though they really hate it)
It is also a time when the younger children rent out their cheeks to pinch as the adults proclaim something along the lines of "Oh so cute!"
It is thought that in this line of business, if the "colour" within the red packet contains ONLY the "Purple President", then it is bad business. "Orange President" is considered not bad and "Blue" is considered good. Other colours are obviously better, but blue is the best i got.
Children often use these "colours" to gauge how much the relative pampers them. Studies have shown that the amount of fussing a relative does to a child is directly proportional to the money received.
Children often take this time to gossip with each other and point out how stingy a relative is. (yes, im still looking at u, purple president aunt.)
